Scams are everywhere!

Using GoFundMe to Scam

  • Reprint from The Buffalo River Reviewby Dr. Randy Mackin, EditorAugust 29, 2024

Have you ever been so moved by a GoFundMe request for money, you actually sent them something?  Yes, the GoFundMe is real, but the reason for it may be bogus, and if you gave, YOU GOT TOOK!

What appears to be a scam attempt to profit from two funerals was detected, according to David Young, owner of Young Funeral Home in Linden.  The scammers set up a GoFundMe account in the name of two local persons recently deceased, claiming to be accepting donations for funeral expenses.

In fact, it was a family member of one of the deceased who discovered the GoFundMe account, which asked for online contributions, and reported it to the funeral home.

Young said his funeral home will never solicit donations or use a GoFundMe page to accept funeral expense contributions.  Persons wishing to help with final costs of an individual should bring their gift to the funeral home office.
