SUBJECT:  DEPUTY SHERIFF JOB DESCRIPTION

GENERAL ORDER: 3.05

PURPOSE:

The purpose of the General Order is to establish guidelines regarding the authority, duties, and responsibilities of Deputy Sheriff in the Perry County Sheriff's Office (PCSO).

SCOPE

This General Order and the authority designated hereby shall apply to the persons appointed as Deputy Sheriff in the PCSO.

DEFINITION

Employees in this class are under general supervision.  Work performed in investigation of crimes and accidents, protection of property, facilities and citizens by law enforcement.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

  1. Patrols, by foot or by motor vehicle, the roads of the county and places of business, enforcing county regulations and state laws.
  2. Investigates accidents involving persons or property, reports probable cause of accidents, and pursues appropriate course of action.
  3. Transports prisoners to and from court.
  4. Directs and controls traffic
  5. Serves warrants
  6. Testifies in court or legal proceedings
  7. Maintains all law enforcement equipment.
  8. Keeps records and makes routine reports.
  9. Performs other work as assigned.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  1. Knowledge of the county and state laws.
  2. Knowledge of effective methods of investigations.
  3. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action.
  4. Ability to ascertain facts by personal contact, observation, and the examination of records.
  5. Ability to explain and interpret pertinent provisions of laws and regulations.
  6. Ability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.
  7. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.


QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet the Minimum Standards Law (T.C.A. 38-8-104) which includes the following requirements:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Be a citizen of the United States
  3. Be a high school graduate or equivalent (GED or USAFI).
  4. Not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor involving "moral turpitude" as the term is defined buy law and not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable conditions from any of the armed forces of the United States.
  5. Have his fingerprints on file with the Tennessee Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
  6. Have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician.
  7. Have a good moral character as determined by an investigation.
