SUBJECT:  SERGEANT JOB DESCRIPTION

GENERAL ORDER: 3.04

PURPOSE:

The purpose of the General Order is to establish guidelines regarding the authority, duties, and responsibilities of Sergeant in the Perry County Sheriff's Office (PCSO).

SCOPE

This General Order and the authority designated hereby shall apply to the persons appointed as Sergeant in the PCSO.

DEFINITION

Employees in this class are under general direction.  Work performed in supervising general police work, protecting property, facilities, and citizens by law enforcement.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

  1. Patrols and supervises others patrolling, by foot or motor vehicle, the roads of the county, places of business, land residential districts, enforcing county and state laws and schools.
  2. Coordinates all patrol and investigative activity on the shift.
  3. Conducts inspections during duty hours to observe condition, efficiency of operation, and conformity with regulations.
  4. Testifies in court or legal proceedings.
  5. Supervises the maintenance and use of law enforcement equipment.
  6. Serves and supervises serving of warrants.
  7. May perform public relations work buy giving speeches and lectures on police work before schools, civic organizations and other interested groups.
  8. Performs related work as required.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  1. Knowledge of the court system and presentation of evidence in court proceedings.
  2. Knowledge of the county and state laws.
  3. Knowledge of legal practices and methods of civil and criminal process serving.
  4. Knowledge of the geographic area.
  5. Knowledge of the principles and methods of police supervision.
  6. Knowledge of the county's provisions for emergency situations.]
  7. Ability to ascertain facts by personal contact, observation, and the examination of records.
  8. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action.
  9. Ability to explain and interpret provisions of laws and regulations.
  10. Ability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.
  11. Ability to serve and supervise those serving warrants.
  12. Ability to plan and direct the work of subordinates.
  13. Ability operate all law enforcement equipment required in the performance of duties.
  14. Ability to keep records and make reports.
  15. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.


RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS

Deputies possession these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class.

  1. Must meet the Minimum Standard Law (T.C.A. 38-8-104) for Police Officers.
  2. Completion of a basic police training course.
  3. Experience in police work.
  4. Must possess a valid Tennessee Driver's License Class "D" Rating as issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety.
