Sheriff Issues Report on Jail Escape & Re-Capture of Jamie Hinson

NEW: Sheriff Weems issues report on Facebook on the recent jail escape and re-capture of Jamie Hinson:

“I would like to thank all my officers, the rescue squad members, fire department members, 101.3, TN River Valley News and volunteers for showing up and assisting in the hunt for escapee, Jamie Hinson.

"My team of officers and Investigators worked around the clock chasing leads and working tips and because of that effort Hinson was captured just 24 hrs after his escape by PCSO Deputies. The PCSO utilized 4 drones, a tracking dog and good old fashioned police work to help bring this to a close.

"Deputies Joe Donaldson, Mike Stockstill and Chris Donegan set out to patrol the Buffalo River, while Investigators Curt Mercer, Rosanna Weems and Sgt Duke worked the highways. Team 1 came up on Hinson in a stolen Kayak about 3:00pm yesterday. It appears that Hinson broke into a river camp and stayed overnight, where he stole knives, food, beer, a hatchet and a kayak. Hinson then began his failed getaway by kayaking north bound, when deputies spotted him. Hinson was taken into custody without incident and transported back to the Perry County Jail.

"In the end, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise . Both Christy and Hinson are what we refer to as career criminals and have been using the revolving door of the justice system for years. Christy has been booked into Perry County jail 37 times since 1999, and Hinson has been arrested 22 times since 2003. They both now face an additional 5 year sentence at 100% for the escape charge, in addition to the charges they were already in jail for. It’s my hope that the court system will hold them accountable this time, and they will serve the full time they have earned.

"I have also began the project to enhance our jail walls. When our jail was built 20 years ago, it wasn’t designed to accommodate the number or nature of inmates we now house. This project is a much needed improvement on the facility.

"Tri County Concrete, Justin Pearcy is generously giving us the material to construct a 10ft wall that will be surrounded by razor wire at the top, for only $2500. Trusty inmate labor will build the wall.
This is another testament to the place we live in. Together as a community, we are improving our facilities and helping safeguard our citizens. That’s why I love Perry County. Time after time, our citizens and business owners have joined efforts with our law enforcement and helped us all make Perry County safer. We appreciate it, and as always, we will continue moving forward.”
